The 21st of the month of June sees the sun – that big beautiful yellow ball of light in the sky – the summer solstice and the year’s shortest night.

So what does that mean for us?

Well, apart from giving us plentiful supplies of natural vitamin D and the chance to make hay whilst the sun shines, that light also has a profound effect on us internally. We are literally made up of light, as our cells have a daily exchange of electrolytes: during the day calcium and sodium move in, while at night the process is reversed and the moon draws out the sodium and calcium, allowing the magnesium and potassium to return. On this day, the night shift works well when we are in a process of natural health. However, if we are stressed, dehydrated, eating heavy foods and having heavy thoughts, the body struggles to maintain this homoeostasis and disease can set in.

Our cells trap the light in the form of photons, which help to oxygenate the body. Our cells also create their own light, which is why healing another has an exchange of light to the process. Thus, the more stagnant the lymph, the more heavy the load we are carrying mentally, physically and emotionally and the more our cells refract the light, allowing further contraction and fear to set in. That is why I am passionate about old-fashioned nursing techniques that carry a full spectrum of light, such as Epsom salt baths, which act as a natural tranquilliser, help to hydrate and increase the flow of elimination.

One of the loveliest things you can do to your body this month is a weekly castor oil liver pack. This method has been known and practised since ancient times and it is thought to help emit white light, which like daylight contains all the wavelengths of the spectrum of colour. This light permeates the cells, giving them energy and lifting stagnation.

You will need:

  • 1 piece of unbleached cotton about 50cm x 30cm
  • 1 bottle of castor oil (organic)
  • 1 roll of cling film
  • 1 hot water bottle

Method:

  1. Fold the cotton into double or triple thickness
  2. Place it on a flat washable surface
  3. Pour on enough castor oil to cover it well, but not so that it drips heavily
  4. Place the oil cloth over the liver area (if you don’t know where this is, look on the internet – it’s important to be empowered of what your body looks like from the inside out)
  5. Wrap cling film over the cloth and around your body to hold it in place
  6. Put on an old t-shirt in case the oil leaks
  7. Place a hot water bottle over the area and leave for one hour

It’s important to start with the liver as the first place to help create movement. Then, you could then do the same procedure over your womb or kidneys if you are feeling some pressure or inflammation. The only caution is if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, then take care and only work with a registered naturopath. Ideally, follow these techniques with an enema to continue moving stagnation. If you click on this link you will find some other wonderful naturopathic techniques to help create more light in your cells and organs.

Also don’t forget that light brings illumination – the way a light bulb drawing is sometimes used to show a thought. We are literally made of light that is slowed and manifests itself as matter. So over the next few weeks, watch your thoughts and words – hold a high level of thinking. Don’t go to negative self-talk and doubt. Let go of judging others and criticising yourself, others and life. In this, you will further help to create light – which is why so often, when someone carrying a lot of light walks into a room, he/she turns heads – it’s like a flash of brilliant sunlight entering. So, beam your light this solstice!

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within.” ~Elisabeth Kübler Ross
