Ditch the Movies and Read Up These Holidays

No doubt you’ve all seen Home Alone, perhaps to the point of memorising the entire script. Not to mention Die Hard and the entire Disney back catalogue? We sure have! As much as we love a good film, this Christmas we’ll be trying something a bit different. In an attempt to break from the routine and improve our health, we will be ditching the movie marathons in favour of a few good books. Here is what we’ll be reading this Christmas….

1) ‘Vegetable Literacy’ by Deborah Madison

vegetable literacy

Our favourite guide to vegetables, written by America’s leading authority on vegetarian cooking. It’s essentially an encyclopedia of edible plants, flowers and herbs as good companions: in fact, she offers tips for perfect pairings between the same botanical families with surprisingly great results. We also love her Kitchen Wisdom (prep tips) and most importantly, her delicious recipes! With up to five recipes per vegetables, the possibilities are endless. When we say it’s groundbreaking, we really mean it. Grab a copy here.

2)  ‘Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs and Sugar’ – Your Brain’s Silent Killers by David Pelmutter

grain brain

By now, everyone has heard someone else talk about going gluten-free. Usually, they blame the sluggish effect grains and gluten can have on digestion or even mental performance (with the post-sandwich, mid-afternoon slump being a prime example). Renowned neurologist Dr. Perlmutter delves into this connection further, as he looks at the little-known relations between grain and brain. If you often find yourself with a ‘foggy’ brain, the reason may be more insidious than you think. This will be a thoroughly compelling and informative read for some, and a real wake up call for others. Available here.

3) Chickpea Magazine, Winter 2013
