SOS WINTER: Five Organic Skincare Tips for Dry Skin

DRY_SKIN

Many people suffer from dry and dehyrdated skin. Try the five tips below and our organic beauty selection to help balance your skin back to health.

  1. Dry or Dehydrated? Dry skin can often be confused with dehydrated skin. One way to distinguish between the two is by having a look at your forehead in the mirror. Visible horizontal fine lines are an indication of dehydration. Increasing your water intake can help with both skin types. Boost your organic skin care regime with an increase in water or herbal teas (not black tea or coffee!) and you will notice a difference. Some change should be noticeable after just a few days. But keep at it, longer term results need some commitment. Try adding our herbal Content Teas to your day. If you’re a fan of coffee, swap your usual brew for a Content Coffee. However, if you have dehydrated skin (common during the Winter months) rather than dry skin, read up our natural beauty tips here.
  2. Oil Intake – If increasing water has helped but you still aren’t getting the results you want take a look at your diet. Dehydrated skin needs water, dry skin needs oil. If skin is dry it is often an indication of not enough essential fatty acids in the diet. Increasing oily fish consumption or adding an Omega 3 supplement to your organic skin care kit may rectify the problem. Take up to 1 gram of Omega 3 per day for 3 months to see results. If taking capsules you’ll need to calculate how many to take by dividing 1 gram by the micrograms contained in each capsule to make sure you are taking enough. Stick with it – true results are usually seen after 3 months. We rely on Minami Nutrition MorEPA PLATINUM. If you’re vegan, try Minami Nutrition VeganDHA or Terranova Organic Omega 3,6,7,9 Oil Blend. Also, give skin, hair and nails an extra boost thanks to phytonutrient-rich foods contained in the Terra Nova Beauty Complex.
  3. Exfoliate – Dry skin may need slightly more exfoliation than other skin types to remove flaky skin. Experiment with manual exfoliation using scrubs containing fine, naturally-derived particles. If you find these tend to exacerbate the problem switch to a gentle natural exfoliant which uses fruit acids to remove flaky skin. Try to exfoliate once a week to keep skin looking fresh and smooth. Our favourites are the Absolution La Creme Gommante which is both cleansing and nourishing; as well as the Intelligent Nutrients Plant Stem Refining Micro Polish which has a lovely creamy texture.
  4. Moisturise – Work out what type of moisturiser works best for you. Some dry skin types love organic face oils while others will behave better with thick organic moisturisers. Be careful not to overload the skin. Apply your moisturiser and leave skin for 15-20 mins, if you have the time, before applying make up. It is tempting to keep adding moisturiser, but if you let the skin rest for a while it will help regulate oil production and you may not need to add more. Most popular instore include the Pai Age Confidence Echium and Macadamia Day Cream (great for mature skin types too) and for particularly sensitive, the Pai Chamomile and Rosehip Day CreamDr Alkaitis Night Cream (used for day & night), the Amala Hydrating Face Cream and soothing Absolution La Creme Riche. In addition Odacite Oleosomes Time Release Delivery Crème, Therapi Honey Rose Otto Ultra Radiance Cream and May Lindstrom’s Blue Cocoon Beauty Balm are also firm favourites for dry skin types.
  5. Sleep – Rest is an important time for skin to repair and regulate itself. Try leaving your skin free from products one or two nights a week. You may be surprised. Leaving the skin free from organic skincare products to self-regulate oil production might help bring dry skin back into balance. If you have trouble getting off to sleep try the Content Dream Tea, formulated by our resident herbalist and nutritionist Jennifer Derham, which helps calm a busy mind (we can’t sleep without it!). Team it with Lotus Wei Quite Mind Energy Mist – spray some on your pillows, face and surrounding before you doze off. It’s guaranteed to help, thanks to a blend of calming flower remedies.
