With London Fashion Week fast approaching (18th-22nd of September), we wanted to shine the spotlight on the more ethical side of the fashion industry. So we had a chatted with Holly Allenby, founder of one of our favourite fashion portals The Acey which features an edited collection of gorgeous, contemporary clothing made with a conscience. Of course, as Holly has some of the world’s most covetable conscious fashion brands at her finger tips, we couldn’t not ask her for some style tips too! Get them below.
- Why did you start The Acey, what inspired you to start it?
The initial idea came out of a combination of discovering incredibly innovative brands that operate with integrity and a frustration with the lack of accessibility to these brands, I wanted to celebrate them in an elevated environment. I think ethics & aesthetics should sit side by side, no compromise is necessary.
I was also working for TOMS at the time in Amsterdam which was a huge inspiration for me, the founder Blake Mycoskie has a book called Start Something That Matters and this attitude is en-grained throughout the company so I was lucky enough to be in a very socially conscious entrepreneurial environment.
- How do you choose or source the brands you work with?
We look for two things in brands: innovation and integrity. We consider the social and environmental impact of each product and work with brands that push the boundaries in sustainability. A lot of research is involved in discovering our brands!
- What are the standard pieces you always have in your suitcase when travelling?
I always travel in a Collective t-shirt – they are so comfortable and their unique combination of organic cotton and modal means they are super soft and are resistant from shrinkage and fading. If headed to a beachy holiday, a kaftan or long shirt from Nanushka. Also, I travel everywhere with my rms beauty Living Luminizer.
- What’s your top tip for packing?
Less is more! It really is. I always like to think what do I actually need and build from there, it usually starts with a bikini (in summer) and a good quality white shirt.
- How would you describe your style and influences?
Classic with a contemporary twist. I always like to think trans-seasonally as opposed to trend lead, I invest in wardrobe staples that take me from season to season.
- Your pick of the Acey essentials?
I have been living in my white leather Esplar sneakers, made in Brazil from wild rubber, organic cotton and vegetable tanned leather – they are great for running round London in. Also, my Matt & Nat Brave rucksack does not come off my back and ideal for cycling along the canal to the ACEY studio. Finally, the organic cotton wide legged trousers – so comfortable, smart and chic.
