GET THE GUIDE: Tips for The Perfect Natural Tan

PREPARE FOR TANNING

This week we are talking all things tanning. From building the perfect natural ‘fake’ tan to prepping skin for sun exposure – we’ve even managed to squeeze in one of our favourite healthy eating tips to ensure your skin is protected, radiant and glowing all Summer long.

For The Perfect Natural Tan

Before sun exposure, prep the skin by dry body brushing with a brush containing natural bristles like this one here by Hydrea London. Always start on the right side of the body, then switch to the left side using light, gentle, long strokes and always brush towards the heart. For a diagram outlining how to do so, read our guide to body brushing here.

After you’ve completed dry brushing, hop in the shower and try alternating the water between hot and cold to further stimulate blood flow and rev up your circulation. After showering apply a natural moisturiser, such as the Tata Harper Redefining Body Balm – a blend of six butters, created to deliver deep, long-lasting moisture and leave skin feeling soft, as well as minimising the appearance of stretch marks. Or if you prefer oils, try the Kahina Giving Beauty Essaouira Body Serum, a moisturising and vitamin E-rich body oil, which helps improve skin elasticity and texture.

20 minutes before sun exposure, generously apply Green People Scent Free Sun Lotion SPF15 with Tan Accelerator. Designed to increase melanin in the skin, the natural tan accelerator included encourages a tan whilst offering 93% protection from harmful UVB rays. This trusty sun lotion also assists in collagen production, whilst assisting the immune system protect against sun damage. On face use the Green People Facial Sun Cream SPF30 which is packed with anti-ageing avocado and green tea, as well as soothing aloe vera.

At the end of the day, be sure to apply an after sun lotion such as Green People Hydrating After Sun Lotion, a soothing blend of Organic Aloe Vera, Calendula and Mint to help reduce skin peeling whilst prolonging tan by retaining moisture in dehydrated, sun exposed skin. For cases of extreme sunburn, Dr Alkaitis Soothing Gel contains a host of anti-inflammatory ingredients to take the heat out of sunburn and promote healing.

For The Perfect Natural ‘Fake’ Tan

Before sun exposure, exfoliate your entire body to ensure an even tan and uniform complexion. We’re currently loving Nathalie Bond Organics Bond Bergamot & Ylang Ylang Body Scrub and the Grown Alchemist Body Exfoliant to energise, revive and tone the skin, getting it perfectly prepped for an even fake tan. After you’ve exfoliated, carefully apply the Green People Self Tan Lotion which promotes a healthy, natural looking tan, is quick drying and is non-greasy. Apply using circular movements, taking particular care at the elbows, ankles and knees. The tan will develop after 3-4 hours and is best maintained by re-applying every 3-5 days.

For a natural-looking wash off golden glow, you can also try the Prtty Peaushun range, which work like a multi-use tinted moisturisers for body and face. If you’re not a fan of basking under the sun, take a look at our tips for sunless tanning here.

TOP TIP: Studies have shown that increasing antioxidant compound beta-carotene 10 weeks prior to sun exposure can help form a natural protection of approximately SPF4[1]. For a list of the most potent beta-carotene foods to stock up on this Summer click here.
