THE LAB: Organic Skincare Favours Flowers for Beautiful Skin

The news is a buzz with coverage of the Chelsea Flower Show this week, and here at Content we are no strangers to the beauty and power of flowers. While you’ve probably heard the benefits of rose and lavender extolled and the virtues of orange blossom and jasmine praised, we’d like to offer a look at three of the more unusual flowers you can find in effective organic & natural skincare.

LAB---MenanthyesMenyanthes Trifoliata Flower – This UK native flower may grow in bogs and fens, but its beautiful white flowers tell of its brilliant ability to handle what the environment throws at it. You’ll find it used in anti-ageing skin care preparations for its ability to help defend the skin from premature wrinkles and inflammation. While its name may be a bit of a tongue twister, this flower’s extract helps to protect cells from oxidative stress caused by environmental stressors (i.e. sun, wind, central heating) and stimulates healthy collagen production, essential for plump, radiant skin. You can find it in the Tata Harper Repairative Moisturiser.

LAB---Lotus-IllustrationNelumbo Nucifera (Lotus) Flower – The inspiration of artists for millennium, the Lotus Flower is known for its beauty and grace. Who hasn’t oohed and ahhed over a Lotus in full bloom? While praise for its beauty is much deserved, we’d like to applaud Lotus as a skincare wonder. A powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory aid, this flower helps to moisturise and calm the complexion by preventing the release of molecules in the skin which cause redness. Find it in Vapour Organic Beauty’s Luminous Stick Foundation and in Pai Lotus and Orange Blossom Bioaffinity Toner.

LAB---NarcissusNarcissus Tazetta BulbFor most of us the blossoming of narcissus and daffodils signals that spring has arrived. This illuminating flower hides a brightening skincare secret; it helps slow the synthesis of melanin, a pigment which leads to dark spots. It also increases firmness and elasticity in the skin, making it a brilliant anti-ageing ally. Narcissus can be found in some of our favourite ranges, including the new Amala Brightening Corrective Concentrate.

There are so many lovely flowers (rose, neroli and camellia to name a few) to choose from, but we think these three, with their proven clinical research and sustainability, are some of the more effective natural and organic anti-ageing ingredients you can find for powerful effective skin protection and repair.
