The Interview: Meet Rachel Winard creator of Soapwalla Kitchen

We are very excited to bring you the UK launch of the cult status Soapwalla Kitchen Deodorant Cream. Available now at CONTENT, we chatted to founder and chef extraordinaire Rachel Winard of Brooklyn, NY, about the effective & natural odour controlling power of her deodorant cream to find out why it works.

Your deodorant cream has gained cult status in the US. Why do you think it appeals to people?

I think the deodorant has become so popular because it’s a natural product that actually works. I, like so many others, tried every natural one on the market and just wasn’t satisfied with the way I felt or smelled. Soapwalla’s deodorant cream utilizes all natural ingredients (most of which are food grade!); I think the fact that it works as well as clinical strength options but without harmful chemicals is key to the deodorant’s success.

The Soapwalla Deodorant Cream is a really ingenious mixture of antibacterial essential oils, moisturising butters, and perspiration absorbing ingredients. How does this combination work as a deodorant?

The powders and clays absorb moisture – they don’t stop you from sweating (which is a good thing!) as only aluminum can do that, but they do keep you feeling drier. The essential oils are antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal, which eliminates odor (bacteria/fungus are accountable for odour). At the end of the day, the essential oils have been working so hard that they’ve neutralized, so you’re left with absolutely zero scent – not perfume over odour, not even the deodorant’s scent, but nada!

Do you have any tips for using this product?

Less is always more. Because my product doesn’t have any fillers or water, it’s highly concentrated and a little goes a long way. Swipe a little onto a fingertip and gently apply to the entire armpit. Allow cream to absorb completely, then go about your day stink-free!

One important point: because I don’t use waxes or fillers, the deodorant cream will change with the weather. If you’re having a hot spell or if you’d like to extend the shelf life of your deodorant cream, feel free to store in the fridge.

We have many customers with Lupus, as someone living with Lupus, why is it important for you to incorporate and use natural products in your daily routine?

Lupus is an autoimmune illness in which the body attacks itself, causing a host of problems ranging from skin rashes to kidney failure. While lupus presents itself differently in each patient, there is an almost universal experience of highly sensitive skin. Our skin is the body’s largest organ and it’s crucial that those of us with compromised immune systems relieve any additional burden by using products with natural ingredients (vs harmful chemicals that force the body to work harder to synthesize or remove).

If people are just starting to swap to natural and organic products which product do you think should be the first to go?

I’m obviously biased and want to say my deodorant cream ☺ But really, it’s anything that goes over a huge portion of your body. Your skin is an organ that breathes and ingests. The more you bombard it with ingredients and elements it cannot adequately process, the more harm is being done. So, I’d actually suggest switching out your body moisturizer and/or face cream first, as they cover virtually your entire body; it’s a way to make a big change health-wise without breaking the bank.
