BEAUTY CONTENT: Organic beauty claims challenged in the USA

This week Womans Wear Daily (WWD) reported that Dr Bronner’s Magic Soaps, Intelliegnt Nutrients, Organic Essence and the US Organic Consumers Association have filed a complaint with the U.S Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program against 13 personal care companies they alleged have make false organic claims on their products.

The WWD article continues ‘…some of the better-known natural beauty brands, specifically Hain Celestial Group’s Jason Pure Natural and Organic and Avalon Organics Brands; Kiss My Face Corp; Levlad LLC’s Nature’s Gate Organcs, YSL Beaute Inc’s Stella McCartney Care 100% Organic Active Ingredients, and Organic Wear, made by Physicians’ Formula Holdings.’ Other brands include Eminence Organic Skincare and Giovanni Cosmetics.

The complaint seems to highlight the use of the work ‘organic’ in packaging claims where no certified organic ingredients are listed in the formulation. This highlights the growing need for universal clarification on worldwide organic certification and clarity for the consumer.
